Our Music Theory
A student-centered music theory curriculum for young string players

Our Music Theory is a creative curriculum that helps young string players explore music theory through storytelling, composition, and improvisation. Designed with inclusion, expression, and joy at its core, the program supports student voice from the very first note.

These guiding principles shape a learning environment where young musicians grow as confident creators, critical thinkers, and expressive storytellers.
Culturally Responsive Teaching
Honors students’ identities, musical backgrounds, and lived experiences.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Builds emotional intelligence, confidence, and belonging through creativity.
Creation as a Demonstration of Knowledge
Students show understanding by composing, improvising, and storytelling.
Interdisciplinary Connections
Links music theory to literacy, writing, and storytelling to deepen learning.
Why Music Theory Should Be Creative and Accessible to Young Students
Traditional music theory is often taught too late and too rigidly. Our Music Theory reimagines how students engage with theory by starting early, centering creativity, and helping students feel that their ideas matter. Since launching in 2023, the program has reached hundreds of students in Title I schools and continues to grow.
